When I was in law school, it seemed that everything was expensive and there were as many law school supplements as there were law case books. Even as an avid reader and even though I had earned a Masters in Political Science, I had never read or tried to absorb so many pages in my life. Of all the study aids out there, I found that outlines from other law students, not necessarily from my same law school really helped me key in on what important and critical course components whose mastery is essential for success in law school and later on the bar exam.
I was also struck with how each of my classmates all seemed to be pulling out different information from the same law classes. My outlines for a class were usually about half a page or so of notes from each class (typed, my handwriting is still not very good) session. Some literally wrote books. Some took no notes. Not surprisingly, those law students who wrote good outlines and/or studied good outlines tended to do better in law school (where any law student will tell you its a lot like the old show “Whose Line Is It Anyway – points don’t matter and the grades are all made up”) and later were able to pass their State’s Bar Exam (which is the real goal and the necessary last level of hazing prior to launching any legal career).
I had come to law school with prior military and law enforcement experience. It also seemed pretty clear that law classes, especially core classes were geared toward not only preparation for future work as an attorney, but also to pass the almighty Bar Exam. I sought out not only fellow students, but through networking, found excellent outline makers at various other ABA accredited law schools. I found that many were fine with passing down outlines for classes so long as I was not actively competing against them for that semester’s grade. In short, during my time in law school, I gathered 100’s of law school outlines from at least 20 different ABA law schools. By thinking like an investigator and not a wide-eyed law student, I realized that there is core information from just about every class that is exceptionally likely to show itself again on the final and perhaps even the Bar Exam.
I concluded to study smart rather than try to learn everything that is being conveyed. Its frankly impossible to grasp all of what you are being taught in law school. By examining outlines, especially many outlines on the same topic, you can see for yourself what is of merit and value.
While my website is primarily focused on serving my law clients in Lake, McHenry and Northern Cook counties in Illinois, I am trying to do my part to give back (and to hopefully offset some of the costs of this website) to the next generation of legal professionals by offering the best of the best of my gathered outlines. My law school packages include several excellent outlines written by different students at various ABA accredited law schools all of whom took the same class.
